One of my favourite tasks at Centauri is wandering around the programs each morning to check in on everyone, and to take photos.
Here’s a little of what I saw this morning…
Vocal Music is working on ‘We are Young’, exploring the lyrics and walking through some basic choreography. There was a lot of laughter as they got used to the song, rehearsing for the first time. In the Songwriting studio, campers had split into groups and were beginning original compositions together. Olivia (Rock N Pop N Mayhem) was working individually with campers to help figure out their proficiency. Stage combat is working with swords already, exploring basic moves and running through safety. The Dance Department has already begun to choreograph two numbers. They spent part of the day exploring Fosse, and another part on Disco. In Fine Art, our ‘Myth Magic, Monsters’ campers have created painted backdrops, and flying creatures to place in them, and now they are beginning to work on mythical sculptures. ‘Playing Shakespeare’ is exploring sonnets, as well as working with voice and movement as the campers begin to trust each other. ‘Acting for Theatre and Film’ has been exploring the requirements of character development, with an overview of terms such as Motivation, Objectives and Subtext, and now they are moving on to examine the difference between scenes on the stage, and scenes created for film. Our Film campers have learned all about the camp equipment, and are now planning their first practical project – a Music Video, which they will make in groups. Stop Motion Animation already seem to have storyboards in place for their first project; lighting and cameras were set up in the room when I visited, and whiteboards, chalkboards and sketch pads were in use as they figured out how to manipulate their original characters. ‘Just for Laughs’ campers are currently running around in strange costumes, no doubt exploring new comic characters they have created as they slink in and out of rooms all over camp, startling us all! And the writers? I tried to find them, but they were out and about, writing beneath trees. Judging from the scribbled notes all over the walls of the writing room, they have been talking about the characteristics of famous figures from literary mysteries – I noticed a list of words relating to Sherlock Holmes.
Camp is peaceful right now. Our International Campers have a trip to Niagara Falls this afternoon. We had a dramatic thunderstorm over lunch, but it passed quickly, leaving the air cool and fresh. We had a beautiful moon over the buildings last night.
