Yesterday we held one of our big summer festivals! Normal activities were suspended for the day and after a sleep-in, campers chose from several ‘classic’ projects to join for the day. Here’s a list of the projects we offered, with exhibitions and performances at the end of the day. Try to guess which project your child may have chosen, and see if you are correct when they tell you all about it after camp!
‘Classic Portraits’… Campers were visited by several costumed actors playing famous artists, and throughout the day created paintings and sketches in their particular style. ‘Restaging a Tempest!’ Campers used dance, soundscapes, movement and Shakespearean text to mount the thrilling first scene of ‘The Tempest’, including the storm at sea and the breaking up of the ship.
‘My Friend Bill Shakes’ Campers created a sequence of TV shows with Shakespearean characters as the hosts and contestants. The resulting performance was hilarious! Be Kind, Rewind This film production project involved recreating, with our campers, well known one-liners from famous movies (the group managed sixteen in total!)
‘Top 40 Hits’ Campers took pop song lyrics and rewrote them in Shakespearean language, then took Shakespearean sonnets, rewrote them in modern lingo, and performed them!
‘Musical Theatre Classics’ In just a few hours, these campers staged and then performed three songs from classic musical theatre pieces.
‘Martha Graham Restaged’ Campers learned all about the work of Martha Graham, then created a mesmerising dance in her style. The results were spectacular, with dancers moving in red light, and their shadows projected beautifully along the side wall of the theatre.
By 8pm, all the projects had been staged or exhibited, and we all got into pyjamas, then joined Julie in the theatre for a bedtime retelling of the myth of Tristan and Isolde. Centauri has a tradition of storytelling, and what better way to end a day themed around the classics, than listening to a classic story? Today, our program directors are back, and regular camp programming has resumed!
