Session One began yesterday – on Canada Day – as we waited excitedly for 130 new and returning campers! We picked up a record number of campers from the airport, flying in from China, Mexico, France, Spain, UAE, Belgium, Singapore and many other countries. Within an hour, all our arrivals were settled in their dorms – learning dorm cheers, making friends and relaxing into camp life. As always, our first dinner of the session was a BBQ, outside under a glorious blue sky. Afterwards, it was fabulous to be able to launch the summer with a Canada Day Celebration! All dorms were given “Passports” and travelled around different provinces and territories (arts spaces around camp), taking part in team challenges, learning the layout of camp and meeting all the program directors. They hunted gems in Alberta, enjoyed an Anne of Green Gables picnic in Prince Edward County, designed new national animals, participated in Maritime games and more. At eight thirty, we met at the outdoor stage, where counsellors volunteered to take part in a quiz about Canada. The quiz comprised ridiculously difficult questions on purpose (example: what is the full name of Pierre Trudeau? Look it up!! It’s not what you would think!) which meant EVERYONE FAILED and the penalty was to be doused in maple syrup, while the campers laughed. The evening ended with cup cakes and hot chocolate in the dining hall, before everyone headed to a bedtime program of music and quiet conversation with their new friends.
