Spotlight on a New Centauri Counsellor!
More than 20 experienced counsellors return to Centauri each summer, but we always have a small number who must move on, usually because their university days are over and it’s time to get a job! This means we welcome about 5 or 6 new counsellors onto the team each summer. In most cases, these incredible individuals are ex-campers who are well known to us all. I thought it might be fun to introduce one of our new camp counsellors to you today, to give you a sense of the people who will be taking care of our campers this summer.
Simone R. is a caring, empathetic, mature and wonderfully talented person. She has spent the past four years as a camper with us, taking programs in Music, Musical Theatre and Clown. Simone loves to sing and plays several instruments, including the ukulele, guitar and piano. She is also an accomplished dancer, and hopes to pursue design and media interests at university. Simone has an interest in social justice and global affairs, and recently travelled to Tanzania to volunteer in a school. In 2012 Simone took the Teaching component of our leadership program at camp, and inspired her fellow campers with a speech about the importance of volunteering to strengthen communities. I recently asked Simone the following questions:
How did Centauri Arts Camp impact your life, when you were a camper?
Every year I returned to camp having grown so much, but I always found my camp friends grew with me – no matter how far apart we lived. No matter how I changed, Centauri accepted me just the same. I also met some of the best people I know at camp. Even if we couldn’t see each other at all during the year, we would meet again in summer and it wouldn’t feel like a single day has passed.
Tell us about some of the things you are doing right now.
I recently applied to schools for next year and am waiting to hear back. I’m keeping myself busy with student council, our school’s musical, and Interact, a student humanitarianism group. Outside of school, I love to do art of all kinds – writing, visual, music, dance, and so much more This summer, I can’t wait to meet new people, make great friends, and be surrounded by the forever-positive attitude of Centauri.
