We have a full camp this session so arrival day was busy!! At the same time as 100 families checked in at our welcome tent, we had a bus full of campers arriving from Toronto, and campers flying in from Korea, India, China, Switzerland, England and France – it was a busy day for us at the airport, as well as camp!
By late afternoon, everyone was settled. After a couple hours in program, all our campers and staff gathered for a BBQ by the dining hall. While we ate, the sky clouded over, and as the final dorm finished their burgers, the heavens opened! We ran for the Odyssey Theatre, where we held our first ‘flagpole’ on the indoor stage. We could hear thunder crashing outside… but by the time we emerged a half hour later, the storm had already passed over.
Evening program saw campers ‘breaking into’ an art museum, where all the paintings (aka our program directors) came alive and offered them arts advice and supplies in return for their help with performances. From their garnered supplies, dorms worked together to create strange art pieces with which to ‘modernise’ the museum. Chatting with counsellors later, they said evening program was a really bonding experience for their dorms, as it allowed for laughter, teamwork and a race-against-time challenge. And by the end, campers had also met all our arts professionals, and explored the entire camp (which is always one of our goals, the first night of each session).
We ended our first day at camp with hot chocolate and home made cookies, and all dorms offered relaxing bedtime programs to help their counsellors fall asleep. As I walked around camp, I could hear guitars being strummed, campers and counsellors singing softly, and a lot of giggling and ‘shushing!’.
I’m writing this blog on day two, after a hectic day of program and workshops, as well as dorm hour, free time and a Broadway themed spirit supper. Right now, dorms are dressed ready for a camp wide game of Cops and Robbers (with an artistic twist, of course…)
We will make every effort to update the blog every few days, and to load up photos every 2-3 days, but we don’t promise, because if we’re needed around camp by our campers, we’re not in front of the computers! Also, please don’t worry if you don’t see a photo of your child (we have a lot of campers), or if they happen not to smile in that particular second!
Session Two is off to a terrific start – the sun is shining and the enthusiasm is boundless!
