Happy New Year! Once the holiday season is over, many families turn their attention to summer arrangements. As you do so, hear are some frequently asked questions – and answers – that will help you decide if Centauri Arts Camp is the right camp for your child.

  1. Friends at campWhat makes Centauri Arts unique?

Our focus on the arts – and our choice of more than 40 arts programs – would be the obvious answer. However, campers would say that what truly makes Centauri unique is the nurturing and supportive atmosphere that enables every child to be truly themselves.

  1. What kind of campers come to Centauri?

We’re an extremely diverse community. Our campers are aged 8-18, and they come from all over North America and up to 20 different countries. They are from all ethnic groups, all economic groups, all faith backgrounds, and while some of our campers have lots of arts experience, others may have very little. What links our campers is an interest in the arts and the desire to be part of an arts community.

  1. How do you keep kids safe?

We have 23 years experience doing exactly that. We have a nurse on site at all times, and our staff are extensively trained. We have a high staff ratio (1:3), an excellent facility, and we have been accredited members of the Ontario Camps Association for almost 2 decades.

  1. What about emotional safety?

Our highly trained team of caring and compassionate counsellors ensure the individuality of each camper is respected and cultivated. Ask our campers what makes Centauri unique and the first thing they most often say is our nurturing community. Young people thrive best when they are supported, and when the adults around them care.

  1. What credentials do your directors have?

Julie and Craig Hartley are the owner-directors and live on site at Centauri every summer. They are directly involved in the running of the camp and have been for the past 22 years. Craig takes care of the business administration of camp. Julie is a teacher, writer and youth worker who is there to support all campers and their families.

  1. Film CampsWho runs the arts programs?

Our arts instructors – like our counsellors – return to us year after year. All have extensive qualifications in the arts, and work either as specialised arts instructors or arts professionals (or both!) during the year. Our program directors are chosen for their teaching skills, and their ability to inspire and enthuse.

  1. What is the food like?

We have several qualified chefs, who produce appealing and wholesome meals in accordance with Canada’s Food Guide. Unlike many camps, our food is prepared on site. We offer meat and vegetarian options at all meals, as well as a big salad bar. Our location in the Niagara Region ensures ready access to fresh fruits and vegetables, and we balance healthy meal options with kid-friendly food like pizza and ice cream! Our kitchen is nut and peanut free.

  1. What about laundry and bedding?

Bedding is provided for all campers, though you are always welcome to bring your own. Laundry is washed on site, twice per session, at no additional cost.

  1. My child doesn’t know anyone. Is that okay?

Most campers attending Centauri for the first time do so knowing no one at all, and campers join us for the first time at all ages. We spend the first day of each session getting to know one another. By the time your child goes to bed on the first night, he or she will know they have friends, and a counsellor who will be there to offer support, no matter what.
