The other day camp had a wonderful surprise. Julie spilled the beans at lunch on Day 3 that Centauri was welcoming back some very special guests. Excitement spread like wildfire as campers and staff alike remembered back four years ago to our very first music festival when the final act of the night had been an up and coming folk duo from Scarborough Ontario. Dala, which is made up of Amanda Walther (the “Da”) and Sheila Carabine (the “la”) brought their unique brand of folk music to Centauri for a second time the other night, singing songs from their new album Best Day and having a great time joking around on stage. The duo has become extremely successful since their last visit to camp. In the last four years they have gone on to record three more albums bringing their total up to five. They have also been nominated for a Juno and they won the 2010 Canadian folk music award for best vocal group of the year. The concert gave campers a chance to relax and enjoy some truly great Canadian music and it was a truly special night for all of us here at camp.
Last night we changed pace entirely. At dinner Blackbeard challenged us to see who was truly worthy of the name pirate. After dinner we travelled back to 1930s Belgium to help Tintin and Captain Haddock solve a mystery. Our campers took on the role of international journalist and had to travel across South America, Africa and Asia to try to find out who was behind the death of President Runar Felsin. In the end it turned out to be the evil and cunning Rastapopolis. Just as the situation turned dire for our heroes and it looked like Tintin and Haddock wouldn’t succeed Tintin’s faithful dog Snowy (played by a G2 camper, Alyssa) jumped in to save the day and capture Rastapopolis. The campers had a great time not only solving the mystery but getting to see one of their friends be the hero. Today we are enjoying some beautiful summer weather and looking forward to a very special Harry Potter evening tonight and our annual Film in a Day Festival tomorrow.
